New Forest Wedding Venues: A Videographer's Perspective

The New Forest National Park is one of the most naturally beautiful settings for a wedding in the south of England. Ancient woodland, open heathland, wild ponies, and dappled light through centuries-old trees create an atmosphere that is impossible to replicate in any other setting.

As wedding videographers based in Bournemouth, we film in the New Forest regularly and have come to understand which venues offer the best combination of natural beauty, practical facilities, and cinematic potential. This guide shares what we have learned from years behind the camera.

Why the New Forest is exceptional for wedding films

The New Forest works for videography in ways that many venues simply cannot match. The woodland canopy creates naturally soft, diffused light throughout the day, which is the most flattering quality of light for filming people. There is no harsh overhead sun, no squinting, and no unflattering shadows. The light shifts gently as it filters through leaves, creating a warm, organic quality in every frame.

The sound environment is equally special. Away from roads and towns, the Forest is remarkably quiet. This means vows spoken outdoors are captured cleanly, and the ambient sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves add a natural soundtrack that enhances the film without overwhelming dialogue.

For drone filming, the open heathland areas provide sweeping aerial shots that establish the scale and beauty of the setting. The contrast between dense woodland and open heath gives wedding films a visual variety that keeps viewers engaged.

Our top New Forest wedding venues

Burley Manor

Set within the heart of the New Forest, Burley Manor combines country house elegance with the wild beauty of the surrounding woodland. The manor lawns work beautifully for outdoor ceremonies, framed by mature trees and the occasional New Forest pony in the background. For videography, the forest paths surrounding the manor provide endless options for couple portraits that feel natural and unposed. The dappled light through the tree canopy creates footage with a rich, cinematic quality that is hard to find elsewhere. Evening receptions benefit from the manor's warm interiors, with candlelight creating an intimate atmosphere on film.

Rhinefield House

A Grade II listed country house hotel set within ornamental gardens and ancient woodland. The Gothic architecture provides dramatic frames for ceremony footage, while the surrounding Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, lined with giant Redwoods and Douglas Firs, creates some of the most visually striking couple portrait opportunities in the entire Forest. The scale of the trees dwarfs even the tallest wedding party, giving aerial drone footage a sense of perspective that adds real drama to the final film.

Carey's Manor

Located in Brockenhurst, Carey's Manor offers a more intimate New Forest experience. The venue combines a traditional manor house with a contemporary spa, giving couples flexibility in their wedding style. For videography, the mature gardens provide excellent outdoor ceremony settings with soft, consistent light throughout the afternoon. The spa facilities are particularly good for filming relaxed bridal preparation sequences.

Balmer Lawn Hotel

Overlooking Balmer Lawn in Brockenhurst, this venue offers sweeping views of open New Forest heathland. The contrast between the hotel's traditional interiors and the wild, open landscape creates visual variety in wedding films. The lawn area is popular for outdoor ceremonies, and the heath beyond provides a dramatic backdrop for golden hour portraits. On clear evenings, the sunset over the Forest creates some of the most beautiful natural lighting we film in all year.

The Master Builder's at Buckler's Hard

Situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River, The Master Builder's offers a unique combination of Forest and waterside settings. The riverside location adds a different dimension to New Forest wedding films, with boats, reflections, and the gentle movement of the river providing visual interest throughout the day. The 18th-century building has character and warmth that films beautifully by candlelight in the evening.

Beaulieu

The Beaulieu estate offers multiple settings within a single location: the historic Abbey, the Palace House, and the surrounding gardens and parkland. This variety is a significant advantage for wedding films, as it allows us to capture a wide range of looks and moods without travelling between locations. The Abbey is particularly atmospheric for ceremonies, with its vaulted ceilings and ancient stone creating a sense of gravitas that translates powerfully on film.

We have filmed at venues across the New Forest and know the light, the logistics, and the best spots for every time of day. View our packages or get in touch to discuss your plans.

Practical tips for New Forest weddings on film

Light and timing

The Forest canopy affects golden hour timing. In summer, the trees block low-angle sunlight earlier than at open venues, so the best portrait light often comes 60-90 minutes before sunset rather than the final 30 minutes. We plan around this so you get the most from the available light without feeling rushed.

Weather contingency

The Forest is beautiful in every season and every weather condition. Rain in the Forest creates a moody, atmospheric quality that can produce some of the most memorable wedding footage. We come prepared with protective equipment for both us and our cameras, so weather never stops us filming.

Wildlife

New Forest ponies, donkeys, and cattle roam freely and occasionally wander into shot. Rather than seeing this as a disruption, we treat it as an opportunity. Some of our most shared footage features ponies grazing peacefully in the background during outdoor ceremonies. It is one of those unscripted moments that makes a wedding film genuinely unique.

Drone considerations

Drone filming in the New Forest is subject to specific regulations. Parts of the National Park fall within restricted airspace, and some venues have their own drone policies. We handle all of this in advance, securing any necessary permissions and identifying the best launch points for aerial footage.

Choosing your New Forest venue

The right venue depends on what you want from your day. If you want woodland intimacy, Burley Manor or Carey's Manor deliver. If you want architectural drama, Rhinefield House is hard to beat. If you want waterside atmosphere, The Master Builder's is unique.

Whatever you choose, the New Forest itself is the real star. Its ancient trees, wild ponies, and constantly shifting light create a natural backdrop that elevates every wedding film we capture here.
